He was born on March 22, 1955 in Moscow. He got his professional education as a violinist in the Gnessin Music School (1970-1974) and in the State Musical-pedagogical Institute of Gnessin (1974-1979; class of the honored artist of RSFSR S. Akhtyamova). During his studies, Grigory Levontin has performed as a soloist and as a member of different chamber ensembles.
He has worked in the orchestra of the Vakhtangov theatre since 1977. In 1979, he entered the Moscow orchestra of chamber music of the State RSFSR concert-tour association “Rosconcert” and got to the premier violin group. During the period since 1982 to 1990, he was holding the position of the concertmaster of the second violins. Besides, during his orchestra work he has regularly performed as the soloist of the orchestra. Since 1986 as the orchestra inspector he has actively participated in organization and managing the concerts in Moscow and other cities of the Soviet Union.
In 1990 Grigory Levontin joined the Moscow State symphony orchestra under the baton of P.Kogan (premier violins group). He has participated in recordings together with the orchestra and chamber ensembles and performed around the cities of Russia, France, Germany, Japan, Spain and many other countries.
Since 1996, he has become the artist of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia under the direction of E. F. Svetlanov (currently State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia “Evgeny Svetlanov"). Besides he is a member of the State Orchestra ensemble and has repeatedly took part in premieres of modern compositions.
Since 1993 until present, Grigory Levontin has been conducting educational work.
Since 1977 he directs his own string orchestra. During its existence, the ensemble has given many concerts in Moscow and other cities and towns of Russia.
Since 2011, he has been holding the post of the director of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia “Evgeny Svetlanov". He has participated in organization of such international contests as “Stories with orchestra” (Moscow, 2013-2017) and “Another space” (Moscow, 2014, 2016); of the world premieres of A. Vustin, E.Podgaits, S.Slonimsky, A.Skryabin – A.Nemtin, C. Orff and K. Stockhausen; of the State Orchestra performances in Austria, Spain, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Turkey, China, South Korea and many cities of Russia; of the release of audio and video CD with concert records of the ensemble (released by Deutsche Grammophon, Pentatone, ICA Classics, Mirare, Delos, Toccata Classics).
